In a world where we are increasingly encouraged to be angry about everything, perhaps it’s worth taking a breath. The Economic Manatee cuts through the noise of economics, politics and the news to ask a simple question:

Why does this blog exist?
Much of what’s reported in economics and politics can be confusing, misleading, oversimplified, or in some cases just plain wrong. This blog exists to make sense of at least some of it in a calm and clear way.
What should readers expect?
Expect thoughtful, fact-based explainers and opinion grounded in facts. We look beyond the headlines to ask what is actually happening, why it matters, and what a reasonable person might make of it.
Our explainers make complicated topics in economics, politics and news understandable without dumbing them down. Our opinion pieces take a step back from the noise and ask a different question: are we looking at this sensibly, or are we simply being encouraged to be angry?
The aim is simple: to help make sense of an increasingly complicated and noisy world by asking what a reasonable person would do.
Who is this blog for?
Whether you’re a curious reader who wants to understand more about the world around them, or just someone who wants clarity on a particular issue, we’re here to help you navigate the noise with calm, clear insight.
Why do you have odd spelling?
You may notice that the Economic Manatee uses “centre” instead of “center”, “colour” instead of “color” and distinguishes between the noun “licence” and the verb “license”. These are not mistakes but are simply because the Economic Manatee is based in the UK and therefore we use British English.
The wider implication is that we focus on UK economics, politics and news first. Much of the information will be relevant elsewhere but do be aware that some information is specific to old Blighty.
So now you know, pull up a chair, put the kettle on, and let’s put the world to rights…

Why do you use AI-generated images?
As of now, we use AI-generated images to represent the content of some of the blog posts. The images are not meant to be art or to replace the ingenuity of human creativity but they are a quick way of adding a visual to represent a blog post. Nothing more than that. The Economic Manatee is run on a very tight budget. Maybe in the future we can employ a dedicated cartoonist but in the meantime, please bear with us as we use the tools at our disposal.
